Practical Tips To Use While Wearing Your 30 Day Event Monitor

Posted on

After having several episodes of fainting or chest pain, your cardiologist may suspect that you have an arrhythmia. Unfortunately, it may only show itself while you are doing certain activities at work or home. Because of this, you will have to wear a 30 day event monitor to capture it. To make living with it easier, use some or all of the tips below.

Take Care Of Your Skin

The adhesive on the electrode pads could irritate and wear down your skin, especially after several weeks of constantly having them on. While you are using the monitor, you can take steps to minimize the impact on your skin and keep it from blistering or tearing.

Whenever you take a shower or bath, gently pull them off. If they are sore when you lift them, use a cotton ball saturated with witch hazel to dissolve the glue. The cooling properties of the astringent will also ease the irritation.

While alcohol will also serve the purpose of removing stuck-on glue, do not use it. It will dry out your skin and sting your already reddened and irritated skin.

When you are showering, use a moisturizing soap to remove any stubborn adhesive that is still sticking to your skin. Lather up the areas and let the soap soak in for two minutes. Then, use a soft washcloth to gently rub the glue off.

After you have dried off, allow your skin to air dry for 10 minutes before you apply the new pads. This will reduce the amount of moisture that could react with the glue and lead to further breakdown of your skin.

When placing the new pads, make sure you put them as close to the original area as possible. This placement is important for getting an accurate reading. However, try to move the electrode a quarter of an inch around the site to help prevent the breakdown of the skin.

If you tend to sweat a lot, this could cause extreme redness and irritation when the perspiration combines with the glue. To keep this from happening, change your electrodes twice a day instead of once. You can get more pads from your cardiologist's office.

Keep Your Regular Routine To Get A Faster Diagnosis

The faster your arrhythmia makes an appearance, the quicker you can get rid of the monitor and receive the treatment you need to fix it. While you may be tempted to decrease your activity while you are wearing it, you should keep to your regular routine as much as possible.

For example, if you have found in the past that you have symptoms such as dizzyness and pain while you are vacuuming the floor, do not give this up. The push and pull action may be a trigger for the irregular heart rate. If so, do this chore a couple of time a week to see if you get the same results.

However, if you know that you have a history of symptoms while vacuuming, make sure you have someone nearby in case you have them again. If you start to feel faint, have that person help you to push your event reporter and get you to a seated or laying down position. This will prevent you passing out and possibly hurting yourself.

Following the above suggestions will help you make the most of dealing with the monitor until you are able to take it off. If you find that your skin is breaking down too much or have other issues, contact your cardiologist as soon as possible. He or she may be able to give you a hypoallergenic alternative or give you further suggestions of making things bearable for you. Go to site for more information.
